Dear Village Hub Families,
It has been a wonderful cycle filled with growth, change, and meaningful learning. We are incredibly proud of the community we are becoming—one rooted in curiosity, creativity, and connection—and we are so thankful that you are a part of it.
From learner-led reflections and inspiring showcases to creative projects, studios, and shared celebrations, this cycle has been full of moments that highlight how much our learners and community are growing together.
Our Cycle 1 Showcase was a celebration of learning, creativity, and community. Learners and the team worked incredibly hard, and we hope you enjoyed experiencing the space filled with their work and energy.
Learners proudly displayed the projects they felt most connected to, with work showcased on the walls and at their tables. Projects ranged from fashion designs, ceramics, and original stories to an aquarium, where one learner creatively raised funds through a fun “adopt-a-fish” initiative to support the learning space.
During the Village Hub’s first-ever show show, we saw the stage come alive with performances that included a lightsaber show, story readings, acrobatics, and breakdancing. It was inspiring to see learners share their talents with such confidence and joy!
A big thank you to the families who organised the celebration afterwards, complete with delicious treats. It was a beautiful way to end the day together.
The following day, learners took part in a reflection session, thinking carefully about what went well and what we might do differently next time. These reflections have given us valuable insights that we’ll carry forward into our spring showcase.
In the final days of the cycle, we offered learners a taste of the studio experience, giving them the opportunity to explore different studio offerings before choosing their studios for the next cycle.
Learners participated in mini studio experiences including printmaking, newspaper-making (journalism), science experiments, watercolor painting, photography, and sewing. These sessions allowed learners to explore interests, and reflect on what excites them as learners.
For the winter cycle, our Friday studios will include a choice between Capoeira, Photography, and Watercolor.
Our secondary learners will also have an additional choice between printmaking (using carving tools on soft rubber material to create stamps and prints) and science experiments.
Our primary learners will take part in a Cooking Studio, focusing on practical skills, collaboration, and creativity.
As always, learners sign up for studios based on their interests, supporting autonomy, motivation, and ownership of their learning.
When our planned scavenger hunt had to be cancelled due to weather, we pivoted to an alternative activity that learners absolutely loved—the Future City Project.
Learners began by researching real cities, creating fun and informative quizzes to challenge one another. From there, they explored what a city of the future might look like, thinking critically about buildings, transportation, energy, sustainability, and community needs.
Using recycled materials, learners then designed and built their own future cities, collaborating, problem-solving, and bringing their ideas to life. The experience concluded with each group presenting their city to the rest of the learners, sharing their thinking, creativity, and vision.
What started as a change in plans turned into a rich, hands-on learning experience full of imagination and teamwork!
Learners had a great time taking part in our hub-wide Cookie Design Contest! They began by exploring what makes an eye-catching cookie design, then sketched two original designs on paper before bringing their ideas to life by decorating their cookies.
Many learners took their designs to the next level, incorporating snowflakes, patterns, and detailed drawings. The creativity and care put into each cookie were impressive!
Congratulations to David, our contest winner, who enjoyed a hot chocolate at snack time as his prize. Well done to all of our talented designers!
While the Learner-Led 360s and the Showcase offer meaningful opportunities to see your child’s growth and learning in action, we also shared additional documentation to support this reflection.
Families of secondary learners received the Learner Vitae, and families of primary learners received a Learner Statement of Growth. These documents highlight progress, challenges, and areas of growth.
If you have any questions about the Learner Vitae, please refer to the FAQ in English or the FAQ in Spanish.
